Exploring Karwar in a day|Best places to visit.

The literary genius Rabindranath Tagore visited Karwar at a young age of 22, stayed there and was mesmerized by its beauty so much so that Karwar finds a dedicated spot in his memoirs.

Well I’m not any literary genius or a poet in any form to write about this place but it did not fail to mesmerize me when I went down there on an impromptu weekend trip, which was put to action just after a sudden idea after a boring day at work. We travelled to Karwar within an hour of planning, stayed for the night and explored the place in a day, since we just had the weekend off. It was just one of those weekend flings I often get but a thrilling one.

Karwar is a coastal city in Northern Karnataka and shares quiet a lot of resemblance to Goa especially for its pristine beaches. It’s a place where one can witness the calm sea-beautiful white sand beaches, wrapped around in ample of greenery. So if you’re looking for a getaway away from the otherwise crowded tourist destinations, Karwar can be coupled with other nearby destinations for a quick trip.

In case you decide to halt over at Karwar, here are my suggestions on what one can do in Karwar in a day.

Visit the Rabindranath Tagore beach -This beach is located just outside the main city centre on the main Goa-Mangalore highway and the one that inspired Tagore in the first place, and so the name. It’s relatively less crowded and ideal for a calm morning walk where the cold breeze will surely set you up in a perfect mood to face the day or to enjoy that perfect sunset with your dear one.

One can also combine the beach visit with the quieter Majali beach and Tilmati Beach. Since Karwar is a coastal city so there are many amazing beaches one can explore there. Take for example the Tilmati beach which is an unusual beach with beautiful coarse black sand. Well both Majali and Tilmati have very less crowd and that’s the best feeling to have.

Love museums? and want to visit a unique one than the Warship museum in Karwar shouldn’t be missed. It’s located along the Tagore beach. The museum consists of items related to the navy but what makes it stand out is that it’s not just any ordinary museum but is housed in an actual warship- the INS Chapal– which was an active warship during the indo-pakinstan war of 1971. It’s a different feeling to enter in such a place you know!

Next up is the Rock garden which lies very close to the warship museum. It’s worth a visit if you’d like to see some miniature rock structures depicting the rural life and cultures of the locals.

Exploring a place like Karwar is never complete without a visit to its local market. Roam around the colorful local market, shop for the huge range of dry fish(that’s the speciality here) and other local delicacies. In fact its one place quiet famous for dry fish quota supply of Goa.

Also if there’s some extra time at hand you can visit the Sadashivgad fort, though I skipped it because it was almost time to get home, it’s a place to visit if forts and fortresses interests you.

Well next, how can we miss the cuisine-Food in Karwar mostly revolves around seafood- no extra points for guessing that! –Trying some authentic Karwari cuisine at the local restaurants, one place I would definitely recommend would be the Swetha lunch home.

How to reach– Karwar is well connected by roads with regular buses to nearby major towns. It also has a railway station. Closest airport is the Dabolim Airport in Goa.

Where to stay-Stay at sterling resort for a luxury stay. Numerous budget options are available within the city as well.

Places to visit nearby- One can pair up a visit to Karwar with a trip to Gokarna or Dandeli not to forget the lovely amazing Goa.
